Tully,

The problem may be other than a clutch problem. If you step on the clutch all the way so as to also, disengage the PTO, will it shift smoother and faster. If, so, the the PTO hollow shaft is not totally spinning freely over the main shaft that goes into the transmission. The PTO shaft is a hollow splined sleeve over the main shaft. You either have a misalignment or the bearing is going bad. Also, check for wear on the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft. If the pilot bearing is worn, it will allow the main shaft to wobble and rub the PTO shaft. Either can result with drag on the main input shaft and cause hard shifting.

When you find out and locate the problem send me an e-mail when you have it fixed. I have a JD 1020 which identical from the flywheel rearward to a JD 2020 and JD 1520. It's beginning to be difficult to shift and I have to fully depress the clutch to stop the PTO shaft to get fast shifts.

I think when I take mine apart I'm going to replace the shifting collars also. It's getting hard to get into gear when sitting sitll and all the gears have stopped rotating, because the teeth have gotten blunt from wear over the years.

Good luck!

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Godfrey, Illinois Country Days - by Cindy Ladage. Except for last fourth of July's Old Gold show in Springfield, Illinois, I don't remember when it was so hot. Nevertheless, the heat didn't keep vendors and visitors alike from enjoying the third annual Country Day's Event. Jane Elliott said the event was originally a one man show. "Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this ... [Read Article]
