Working cattle is an art and few people I have known have the knack. When I was a kid, yelling, jumping, screaming, slamming gates, throwing things, hitting animals excessively, etc. was the norm at our place. I doesn't have to be that way. Now I do it by myself, quietly and unsuspectingly. When the cattle get riled, I quit and go do something else for a half hour or so. Also, having a well-thought out place to do it is essential. Now a days, I actually enjoy doing it rather than fearing and despising it as I did as a kid.
