Your goal is to put the seed into clean soil at the right depth. One of the problems I have had planting no till into cornstalks is the depth wheels riding up over trash the trash whippers have thrown out to the side. The whippers did a fairly good job of making a fairly bare seed bed, but they can't get that trash thrown far enough away and the depth wheels ride up over the trash, lifting the disk openers up out of the soil. So, the seed bed is clean but the depth control is less than desired. Doesn't happen all the time, but anytime one seed is laying on top of the ground the yield potential is hurt. Some guys like a single coulter with no trash whippers. Narrower depth wheels helps but they don't float as well in soft soil if you do plant into plowed ground. It takes some work. You don't just drop it in, check it once and then go plant the rest of the field without leaving the seat.
