Grounding the field terminal on the generator may not work if the generator has lost its residual magnetism. To recharge its magnetism you have to "flash/polarize" the generator or remagnetize it. How to do this is to hook a wire up to the HOT BATTERY TERMINAL (not the grounded terminal) then tap the other end of the wire on the "A" terminal of the generator a few times. It will spark a little. NOTE I DIDN'T MENTION POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE POST OF THE BATTERY, I SAID HOT AND GROUND. If the wire doesn't spark the generator may be bad. If it sparks a few times then start the engine and with it running take a test light and hook it to the "HOT" battery terminal and touch the light onto the "A" terminal of the generator and the light should not burn if it does rev the engine up to full speed and see if the light goes out if it does the generator is good. You just made an idiot light out of the test light... If the amp meter still doesn't charge after this test proceed to the regulator and see if the light goes out on the battery terminal on the regulator. If it goes out regulator is good. Now proceed to the amp meter and test both terminals on it. Light should go out on both terminal of the amp meter. Just a month ago I had to do this to my neighbor's little ford 8N.
