If you have a "window air conditioner" it should not have an exhaust tube.
If yours has an exhaust tube, it is a "portable air conditioner."
The function of the exhaust tube on a portable air conditioner is to funnel the hot air out the window to the outside.
Air conditioners don't magically make the air cold. They do it using science, by transferring the heat somewhere else, usually to the outdoors.
If you don't use the exhaust tube on your portable air conditioner, the air in the room will not cool down. You will feel cold air coming out of the air conditioner on one side, but you will feel HOT air coming out the other side. Hot and cold will mix back together, and you will end up with the same temperature as before, or hotter.
