Reboot your computer. Pull the power cord to the printer, wait 60 seconds and plug it back in.
One time a techie at HP told me to hold down the "ON/OFF" button while unplugging the power cord to the printer for 60 seconds.
These are all individual hints, not necessarily to be done at the same time. One or the other has always worked on my printer.
I have an HP printer that's probably 6 or 8 years old. I think I probably paid $34 for it when bought it, and over the years I've put hundreds of dollars worth of ink cartridges through it. But I like it because it's fast and does a good job. It has a half dozen quality settings from "Fast Draft" to "Photo", and it's easy to switch settings.
I've tried newer, higher priced ones, and I always come back to this old beater.
