For the pump - you just unbolt, unhook lines, and pull off. It connects to the crankshaft- pulley via a 7/8" splined coupler that it will slide right out of IF not rusted stuck. I had to pull the pump out of Case 580CK recently that WAS rusted stuck.
Starter "clicking" usually has nothing to do with any gear not being in mesh. The solenoid contacts are supposed to make contact (not just click), then a magnet gets pulled in that moves the starter drive into place in the flywheel. Once in the right spot, a button gets hit that makes the starter spin. So the correct sequence of events is #1 the solenoid gets energized and moves the starter drive into place, and #2 the starter then starts to spin. Usually "clicking" happens at stage # 1 when the contacts are poor or voltage is low.
