I use Tom Cat bar bait which is a 1" square of product, cut at about 2" long with a hole in the center. Sells in a 4" tub for about $15.
I made a wooden box with limited access at both ends but big enough to accept a good sized rat, like the mouse things you see at the store but 10x18x4" high with divisions in it to separate the bait section from the outside so that something that couldn't get inside couldn't get to the bait. In the bait section I threaded 4 of these bars onto a piece galvanized wire, about 17 ga which sticks out both ends and is secured. I put this under any vehicle I leave outside. It works.
