I heard a double yolk meant the hen was about at the end of her career. The hens we have now put out a few doubles when they were starting to lay but I haven't seen one for a year at least. We have 15 hens and twice last summer we got 16 eggs in one day. No I did not miss one from the previous day. After the first time I made darned sure I checked all the nests and then it happened again. Second time it happened they had been laying 100 percent for a few days prior to the day they laid 16. The next day I gathered 14.
