In my mind, the system should have some way of knowing the fluid is likely frozen and shut the system down. I know the GM trucks are supposed to do that because they had software issues when the '11s came out with DEF that did not do that correctly and idled the engine prematurely. GM trucks also have heaters to delay the freeze.
