I found this to be a very well written article that gives very valuable information. I would like to add one suggestion that helps to stablize the tractor when spliting it. We always drove wood wedges between the top of the front axle and the front axle support to keep the engine half from tipping sideways. We also made a short steel sawhorse from a piece of 8" channel iron and angle iron to place under the oil pan and used wood blocks of various thickness to block up under the engine. If you have some hardwood shims you can adjust the height to keep the engine from dropping even a little when splitting the tractor. With the front wheels blocked, this keeps the front of the tractor very stable during disassembly and reassembly.
