I agree to some degree. But todays gadgets are simply too complicated for all but the most advanced hobbyists. When computers were new and very very expensive then someone could buy a kit and build one from scratch. Etch your own boards solder on components etc. What would you want to build from the components they had/have available. How about a blueray player or a camera or even a radio. You can now buy a completed and refined product cheaper than you can buy the components to build your own. Not including the nice case to put it in. I built my fair share of gadgets and things from parts from various places and loved to do that in my youth. Unfortunately there is not much call for those components and certainly not enough to keep a brick and mortar store open. So they had to diversify and try to change. They just weren't very good at it. Sears is another example of a store that didn't see the writing on the wall and capitalize on their infrastructure and catalog power. If they had they could have been bigger than Wal-Mart. Remember you used to be able to buy a kit house from sears and have the parts delivered to your lot. Times change and so do the people, I don't think many people want to tinker as much as in the past. Today is just a throw away world for the most part for the consumer as the parts are so expensive on their own. Sorry for running on.
