Check valve? Do you mean float valve? If your Regular has the factory carb, with the round float bowl the float setting is pretty fussy. The main stem in the middle of the carb might have rust in it, or the little holes in the side of the tube might have rust in them, making them ineffective. You can get new ones if you can't get this stem cleaned up right. That style of carb wasn't used for very many years, then they went to the much better 'conventional' style carb on the F20.
