Very few pc's have actual hdmi. Most likely data to hdmi.
Try pressing Fn+F7. Then select 'Duplicate' to put your desktop on the tv. What you have is 'Extend', which is like using dual monitors. The tv is acting as a stand alone monitor with just your background.
On some newer pc's you just need to press F7, like my laptop at work.
