I can think of several possible uses, but the fact that it is made of copper or bronze has me puzzled. I do know that neither copper or bronze will create a spark if dropped or struck, so that makes me think that maybe it was intended for use where a potential spark would be a very bad thing. Possibly military or in an oil refinery?
