As I recall Petronix uses a magnetic pickup. I've installed several for myself and friends but that was many years ago.
There is a metal star that goes over the distributor shaft (where the cam lobes are that operated the points) with fingers corresponding to the number and location of the cylinders to be fired.
There is an electromagnetic pickup mounted where the points were mounted whose purpose is to "sense" the presence or absence of the fingers. As a finger passes the magnetic pickup it induces a pulse which is sent to the triggering switch, SCR or MOSFET and fires it. The switch stays on until the backswing off the coil pulse, of reverse polarity shuts it off if an SCR, MOSFET shuts off when the trigger disappears.
