grab the pto shaft and see if it moves in and out. If it moves more than the thickness of a quarter, your rear bearing mount needs to be pulled and the locking circlip needs to be put back in. Sometimes the rear bearing housing is damaged and the groove will not hold the clip in place. also if the inner end of the shaft has twisted, it will unscrew it self and pop out, when loaded,, you will then need a new shaft.
I have shredded with a shredder,,officially,, a rotary cutter aka brush hog, and cut with a sickle bar, and have used a disc cutter, a mowco, disced and rennovated, plowed, mowed,baled, harvested,, but never slashed with a slasher... :D
