Nominal battery voltage for a sub c NiCad cell used on cordless drills is 1.2 volts. A 12 volt drill battery pack has 10 cells. A 14 volt battery pack has 12 cells. A 18 volt battery pack has 15 cells. On an 18V Dewalt XRP pack there are 15 cells. 14 cells go inside the bottom of the pack holder. The last one goes in the neck of the top cover. There are 3 contacts in the top cover. Two are for the battery's charging lugs. The third one is for the thermistor lug. The thermistor will not let the battery charge if it gets too hot! it Opens on temperature rise shutting the charger down. Top picture is an Dewalt XR pack.
