We had a '50 dodge 1 ton pickup. Made it into a flatbed with hoist. Dualled the back with the original "pickup wheels" but a spacer and long lug bolts. Coming down a hill and long straight away coming up on a left turn at a junction, made the turn and hit the gas, nothing. The outer dual was gone, lug bolts all broke off, inner wheel center running on hub, just spinning. Never did find the other wheel. Went to the junk yard and found "dual" wheels.
Had a '65 Chevy 2 ton truck with a 16' bed and hoist, long wheelbase, load of wheat. No matter that you loaded the back heavy, always to much weight on front axle. Going up a hill, right front spindle broke, dropped axle on the pavement. I turned the truck left instinctivly, to stay on the pavement, put a big bind in steering and broke the left spindle then. Sure glad it broke on the hill as I had been coming down a hill and long straight, probably had been going 65. When it broke, was going no more than 30, all happened in a hurry.
Pulled peppermint tubs with a 4430 JD with a rope release quick hitch on the 3 pt. Quick hitch was worn bad and loaded tub came unhooked going around a right turn. I slowed down catching the tub hitch on the quick hitch frame. Almost stopped when the tongue dropped and front of tub ran up on tractor tire. Everything looked OK, kept using tractor without quick hitch, just using regular drawbar and hitch pin. About a week later, going over a dike and down into a river crossing the axle housing broke, set tractor right down hard. Glad I wasn't pulling a full tub then....James
