That sounds steep for a suburban. My wife's Escape alternator went bad 150 miles from home while staying with friends. Independent shop they knew quoted $600 for the job. I saves some by having my rebuilder ship them an alternator and them installing it. On the Escape you have to remove the right front axle shaft to get the alternator out. I don't like working in a snowdrift that much.
