We had the same thing here in 2011. Everyone called it 100 year flood but according to what my grandfather told me, it never even came close to the 1917 flooding. I guess it was climate change then too. Now days it would be advisable to do your homework before building or buying a house. We have the technology to find out if a house is in a possible flood area even if it isn't designated a flood zone. Looking up flood records and using a GPS for elevation might save your house or even your life.
I do feel sorry for those that have lost their homes and loved ones.
