As with all new and often misunderstood technologies, GMO will grow in fits and starts and there will be setbacks here and there.
There were a lot of people who swore that the internal combustion engine was bad and would eventually die out as a fad. Many states even passed laws that required the operator of a horseless carriage to do ridiculous things to avoid upsetting horses.
Computers were also slow to start. Old man Watson, the head of IBM, turned down the original computer design as he thought there would only be the need for two or three machines in the whole world for all time.
Overall the future is on the side of GMO and at some point (maybe not even during this generation, but at some point) GMO will win out and everyone will wonder what the fuss was.
