In a wet year there is plenty pasture and a bad hay crop is better than none at all... one can still graze it if need be.
Drought is another matter.
I am in a "ell of a pickle.
We had only 1" of rain since april 1 and no rain in the near forecast either.
My pastures are already bare and there is no regrowth, the animals are losing the battle for feed with the grasshopper infestation that also has sprung up(i counted well over a 100 per sq yard).
The meager hay crop is also disappearing fast.
Them filthy little critters eat it faster than i can cut it and by the time it is cured there may be nothing left to bale :(
Hay is already going for $250/ton not including trucking and there is little to be had to start with.
