7 year old grand daughter and I went out to pick the second picking of the first crop of sweet corn. We picked around 20 dozen ears.
I've tried freezing on the cob, cutting kernels off and freezing, canning, etc. I just don't like any of these. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Anyway...I pulled out about a dozen ears to eat and called the closest neighbor(about a mile down the road) and asked if he wanted any sweet corn. The floods and the raccoons wiped out his sweet corn patch, but I still had some of mine.
He came up with a feed sack and we filled it up with sweet corn, plus we picked a few handfuls of different varieties of peppers and tomatoes.
He looked down at the pile of sweet corn and said "What are you going to do with the rest of it? Freeze it or can it?" I said "No, I'm going to take it to the local food pantry".
He looked at me like he didn't understand, so I explained further..."You know, Like a food Bank".
He still looked at me like he didn't understand. So, explained further..."You know, it's a place where you can donate food to help others in need of food".
I still get that same quizzical look from him. Then he asks two questions, "Why did you grow it?" and next... "Why don't you sell it?". I tell him that "I'm just trying to help other people since I've got the land and equipment".
At this point. he just kinda shrugged his shoulders and shook his head while he drove off with a feed sack of sweet corn and a load of peppers and tomatoes.
