We learned that after tagging with the y-tex tool, you still have to pinch it together a little further with your fingers and thumb until the pin snaps into place. We have three different tools, and none of them push the pin in far enough to make it snap. Without taking the extra effort to squeeze it a little further, yes, they do soon fall out. If they have been snapped in, they don't come out. They do however fade after about three years and you can't read the number they were given as a calf. Overall, no, I am not that impressed with them either.
