The term "dead furrow" has always intrigued me. As a youth I wondered how it got to be "dead". About 10 years ago I was talking to an old timer and he said the proper term is "debt" furrow. Saying "dead" and "debt" makes them sound the same.
When you end up with a "debt" furrow and then you try to close it back up somewhat you are actually replacing the soil you removed...in essence you are repaying a debt of soil that you incurred.
Whatever you want to call it....it is better than an old guy I once knew who always talked about his bull and "tieing him loose"! He also once said "Throw the bull over the fence some hay".
