To work on a John Deere it is going to take a bit more than just converting a 10SI or 12SI to 12 volts. Going from 12 to 24 volts is easy, just change the regulator. But in this case you are going to need an alternator that does not charge through a grounded base since you have one battery negatively grounded to the chassis and the other one positively grounded. You can find alternators like that used on heavy duty trucks and buses. They will have a connection for both a positive lead and a negative lead, both insulated from the case. When installed they can be used with either a positive or negative chassis ground. All you need to do is make sure you have the positive and negative leads properly connected to the alternator.
Using a combination of two Delco 10SI alternators can work, you just need to have one built for positive ground. In that case they will both be 12 volt alternators.
What it ultimately comes down to is unless you already have an alternator that will work for 24V isolated case, it is going to be cheaper and much easier to just get a 12V starter and switch everything to 12V negative ground.
