You can spray with an older tractor without a cooler but you probably don't want to do it for a long time or the oil will overheat. Building enough sprayer volume and keeping it steady might be a problem because of the low gallons per minute the old pumps put out. As Vis S said, stopping the oil flow suddenly is not good for the hyd motor. If your tractor has a float position run the pressure to the hyd motor on the downstroke side of the hydraulic lever, usually the forward position and then slip the hydraulic lever into float to stop the hyd motor. If you are spraying all day with an open center system you might get hot oil even with a cooler. If your open center tractor has a cooler make sure the cooler and radiator are spotlessly clean to obtain maximum air flow. Your engine radiator has to be clean too or it will slow down airflow through the oil cooler if it is in front of the radiator. I spray with my 1086 with open center system with a hydraulically driven pump all day long but I keep the cooler and rad very clean. The hydraulic oil still runs a little on the 'warmer than I would like to see' it side.
