I had Tracfone for years but the biggest problem is they only work on Verizon towers now.
I have a phone with Ting now (http://ting.com) and it's nicer for me since it works on Sprint, Verizon, and USCellular towers (for voice). $6/month to keep the phone active, then $3 for the first 100 minutes you use per month. If you use texts or data that's extra as well.
They're a reseller for Sprint (CDMA phones) and for T-mobile (GSM phones). You most likely do NOT want the GSM phones since T-mobile is basically only for populated areas and along the interstates in between.
