I've hunted both ways. With decent gear and without. I've taken more game WITH the decent gear than without although I never did real bad with without. Last time I was out with people hunting geese the 4 of them were all shooting 3-3 1/2 mags. We had nice decoys and nice laydown blinds. I was shooting an 1100 Remington 2 3/4. I took more geese and fired less ammo than they did. But on the other hand because of my military service I've fired a heck of a lot more than they can even think about and was a small arms instructor. Those guys sure did a lot of sky blasting. My nephew, 2 of his buddies and a retired cop. The cop wasn't any better than the kids.
Thing of it is a guy with all the gear who knows how to shoot will take more game than someone without the gear simply because his camo and other stuff is better. Here we get a lot of folks from the twin cities who can afford leases and very nice equipment but other than checking the zero don't do any shooting. The guys that shoot do much better.
As far as boats and fishing, a nice boat with all the bells and whistles often produces fewer fish than a rowboat because the guy with the fancy boat is spending his time cruising around the lake showing it off. Fact is the guy who has a line in the water the longest is going to catch more fish. Now you take a guy with a nice boat, good gear and have him keep his line in the water just as long as the guy with rowboat you are not going to see much difference.
