I'm currently giving an Ooma home phone a try as an alternative to Vonage.
Ooma is also a VOIP system. I have the home version with only the basic services for only three weeks so far. It is working for me, so I'll stay with it. The equipment can be found at many retail stores for between $110 and $150 and the reoccurring fees for the basic service is $4 per month plus local FCC taxes. A premier services package offers more features and international calling for an extra $10 per month. Calling is not unlimited, but the limit is much higher than I have ever needed. Last weekend Amazon had the Ooma home equipment on sale for $90 including a wireless/bluetooth adapter.
Ooma offers a different system for businesses. I can send an receive faxes through my email.

If I remember right, Vonage equipment was free, but the monthly fees are higher starting at $10 per month for the first year and then $25 per month after that. For me the breakeven point between Ooma and Vonage was at about 15 months for the basic service and about 24 months with Ooma premium service.
