Well, not knowing much about where you are or what kind of truck we are talking about, I still have a few suggestions...
What code or codes are being generated? Some of the most difficult to diagnose are mixture codes and evaporative emission codes.
Many shops, dealers especially included, do not do the necessary diagnostic work prior to starting the shotgun approach. Sad but true.
I had a guy come to me about his check engine light. He told me that another shop told him he needed a fuel tank. Just conveniently, they had one in stock, and they would be happy to put it in for him for the measly sum of $1000. He did not want to spend that much money, so he asked me to check it out. It had only the "famous" gas cap code. I checked out the entire fuel system carefully. Found no obvious problems. So, I took a critical look at the gas cap. No problem found. So I looked CAREFULLY at the filler neck where the gas cap was meant to seal. Found a small crack. For a temporary fix, I applied some epoxy to seal the crack. So far, 3 weeks and no more codes. Another guy was getting a lean code. I found that the upper intake manifold gaskets were just plain shot. Found that spraying some carb cleaner around. So, it should not be a major expense to diagnose or repair.
