I tighten them down to seat the bearings then back off, then pull the nut up till all the slack is gone...
You will need to get a feel for the slack, end play are what the hub and bearing assy feels like when its a tad loose... Push pull are install the tires and use a crowbar under a tire again the floor to get a feel for it... Take all the loose feel out of it till you feel resistance on the nut and no loose motion life will be good...
For us that do this type of work would check for excessive freeplay and adjust to out liking... I like zero preload No loose motion are free play...
