think I'd just put a screw hook in the ceiling - hang the spring from that (use some chain if your ceiling's high) - then just hang some weight on the bottom end till it opens. Should be able to have the spring right at a very easy to paint height.
You can leave the hook there for painting other stuff - very handy to have a place to hang parts for painting so you can get all sides at once.
