We had an ongoing problem with skunks in the henhouse. Usually found when collecting eggs after dark. We had a regular drill worked out. Any two members of the family could pull it off. One who found the skunk would grab the spotlight, other the .22 rifle. Back in the hen house, one with flash light would open front of nest, shine light in particular nest in question, and whistle. When skunk looked up, other person would shoot it between the eyes. Skunk would expire on the spot. Rarely stink, and if it did, a change of straw in the nest would solve any odor problem.
