Make sure the regulator has a good ground from the base to the tractor. Check to make sure the ground strap on the shock mount is in good shape.
To test the alternator, remove the f terminal wire from the connector at the alternator and leave it disconnected while you run a jumper wire from the output terminal to the f terminal on the alternator. This puts the alternator into maximum output. If you still have the same symptoms the problem is in the alternator.
To do this test you must disconnect the F (field) wire from the alternator and leave it disconnected. The regulator will connect this wire to ground when the voltage goes above the maximum voltage setting. Just running a jumper wire without disconnecting the wire will destroy the p0ints in the regulator.
