Your neighbor might be right if all his corn was second tier corn. A friend was planting some Unity corn. He was saying the same thing. I gave him three bags of "good" seed corn that did cost $50 per unit more than what his seed did. He planted it and it yielded 38 bushels an acre more. He now buys better seed corn.
I have found that your seed corn is NOT a good place to cut corners. You can have half crops with cheaper seed in stress conditions. Buy better corn and MAX out the discounts, such as early order an early pay.
