I had a blister on my right great toe. No big deal. Well in a week it became so red and inflamed I finally went to the hospital in Canada. Fast forward..After two years and seven doctors in my travels I finally found a specialist. A Diabetic Foot Ulcer Specialist. He then treated me for a couple of years. Mostly he would trim the non viable tissue once a week. Bandage it with the instructions (and the supplies) to clean and rebandage ONCE A DAY. Absolutely no tap water allowed. Only saline sterile water and no salve except a product called Tegaderm Hydrogel which has no medicine in it. Just a wound filler. He said if I followed his directions, I would keep my toe. If not, then 20% chance I would lose it. No brainer to me.
I'm happy to say all is well, but I still have no feeling in my feet, and I do an inspection every evening and always after I think I may have dinged something down there.
