My wife had shingles in 2010. She had it on the right side of her scalp and face. Luckily there was no eye involvement. She had just been diagnosed with diabetes. Two months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her nurse practitioner and a radiologist told her the shingles indicated the deeper underlying problems that were weakening the immune system. Her body was trying to tell her something. She is perfectly fine now.
I immediately went to the health department and got the shot. We had United Healthcare at the time and they paid for it.
My wife later got the shot because she did not want to get shingles a second time (it can happen). Blue Cross Blue Shield paid for this one. Some insurance companies cover it after age 50; others after age 60 so check your coverage. We never realized shingles was so debilitating and hit so many people.
