I've been having trouble with a 12v voltage regulator and generator on my old international. I've ordered a new VR for it and am waiting for it to come in. I don't think I fully understand how they work and I'm a little hard headed so I've been doing all the testing I can find on it and all the procedures say basically if this ( whatever test result) is the case then replace the VR with a new one. But it doesn't say what it is that is wrong. . If there a short in the windings somewhere? is a contact too to worn? Did all the magic leak out? . . Nothing. On everything else I know what it is that failed and why it needs replaced.
Anyway a buddy gifted me with box of old regulators. All of them were obviously bad except for 2. Just dirty contacts, the problem is how can I tell what voltage and amp range they are for? There are no markings on them. One is a 3 bobbin type the other a 2 bobbin. The 2 bobbin one has 4 connections but one is a dummy (so really only 3) and it has very light (thin wire) windings. I'm guessing this is a 6v one. The other 3 bobbin has thicker wire windings and I'm guessing this is for 12v it also has 3 connections.
