I just started reading Joshua Chamberlain's "The Passing of the Armies". Read it about 3 years ago and decided since it was snowing like gangbusters today, it was a good time to revisit the work. Chamberlain writes in old English style much like James Fenmore Cooper and it is not something you can read in three hours. I have James Longstreet's "From Manassas To Appomattox" and Longstreet seems to write in a more modern English style, which is easier to read.
Chamberlain started teaching as a Professor of logic and theology at Bowdion College. In 1861 he became Professor of modern languages. He could also read Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, French, and German. That would explain his writing style to some extent. He won the Medal of Honor for his actions at Little Round Top and served 4 terms as governor of Mass. and 12 years as President of Bowdion College. Quite the life.
