I made a tool for measuring piston stand out and sleeve flange protrusion. It is shown on some engine rebuild u-tube site and really works great. All my years at IH I had their factory approved tool that worked good. Using a dial indicator with magnetic base can get pretty frustrating when you get down to .001 readings as you have to move the base when making readings and that can throw you off. If I did not have the right tool, I would find a bearing race that fits the sleeve flange with enough hang over to get a feeler gauge under it or a nice flat plate, and clamp it down solid with a bar across it and into two head bolt holes. Have to keep them flanges within .002 between cylinders maximum and low to the block like .003.
