I agree -- it's hard to know where to put money that is safe and worthwhile. I have diversified investments, but about 60% in moderately aggressive stocks. I have more faith in 10-year averages than day-to-day Dow performance. I stuck it out in 2008 and came out in good shape, although I've taken a helluva hit in the last quarter or so. But I don't want to sell when prices are low, because it just locks in losses. I probably won't change my strategy until I am forced (by law) to start taking minimum mandatory withdrawals from tax-sheltered holdings. So my unsophisticated solution has been to not look at my daily beating for the past few months. My best investments in recent years actually have been in decent-quality guns -- Winchester 9422s, Marlin 39As, Ruger six-guns, old Savage combo guns, and many others. They all seem to keep going up in value if you can buy at reasonable prices, but they certainly aren't the most liquid investments you could make. (FWIW, the investments I have are supplemental to my pension, a fixed annuity, and Social Security, which I won't claim until I hit age 70. If I lose my arse in stocks, I guess I won't starve.)

The colony remained far from self-supporting and it was not until the early 1800's that things started to improve. Free settlers started to arrive, they followed the explorers across the mountains and where land was suitable set up farms. T
