I never knew there was so much interest and activity in goats until we got started reclaiming our old fields and selling the hay or more like weeds off it. Those first cuttings, I advertised as "goat" hay as they were full of weeds and some Autumn Olive. We sold every bale.
Interesting thing about goats and those who raise them. There are a broad variety of goals for each. Some only have goats to keep down brush and weeds. Some just have a goat or two and who knows why - maybe a pet! Some raise goats for essentially chemical/antibiotic free meat and dairy. Others are selling the same. One fellow told me he had goats because he felt they were easier for him and his wife to handle vs cattle. Some are from other countries where goat consumption is their tradition.
Bottom line is - there is a strong, yet diverse market for goats and the products that support them.
In a time where we read about mega corporate farms, there seems to be a certain under culture thriving, be it goats or organic products and this arena strikes me in some ways as the reserection of the family farm.
