But, new rules are here for produce growers, and expected to ramp up as the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) for the first time regulates the growing of fresh produce under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FSMA spans over 500 pages and is extremely complex. Part of this complexity begins when growers try to determine if they are exempt or qualify under the rule. Signed by the President back in 2011, this all about food safety, record keeping & traceability, no matter what size your farm is. Like healthcare reform, it's all tied into your tax returns, and information retrieved from your filings is how USDA Officials come knocking on your door to see if your in compliance with mandated record keeping.
