Okay, the Dodo has been extinct for 350 years and that was caused by the introduction of invasive species (rats, cats, dogs, pigs) and deforestation on the island of Maritius. It wasn't caused by hunting or some yahoo taking potshots at pet Dodos. The Passenger Pigeon was driven to extinction by market hunting and habitat destruction. The Great Auk has been gone for over 200 years and it was, again habitat destruction and the down market (as in comforters) that did that, not people shooting pet Auks. American Bison, market hunting and gov't policy. What any of these have to do with you letting your cat loose to roam the neighborhood at will I don't know. The obvious answer for all you cat owners is to keep your cats in the house or in the yard. I'm sorry your cat got shot, but your pets have no right to trespass on other peoples property. You have no right to inflict your animals on nature and other people.
I'm fully in favor of all cat owners having to license their felines just as dog owners do. They are a plague on small game and birds and the responsible thing to do is keep them at home.
