I have done cylinder rods in a hydraulic press. Like ditch witch says, always push the high spot down. If your using the tubing bender, push against the high spot. I put a piece of aluminum against the rod, to keep from putting dings in it. Wouldn't need to do that with the pipe bender. Go a little ways and then check your work. It is possible to work out a fairly sizable bend in one. It can be done with a hammer also, but you run more risk of boogering up the shaft. Just don't hit the hammer to the shaft, and have it supported in some wooden vee blocks. Just a thought, maybe could be done just laying on some firm dirt.
