We had the second gen SOS on a Commander 6000 back in the early 70s. Never really had any problems with it, just a leaky seal between it and the rear end occasionally. You'll like the SOS if you get a good one. Only thing I like better is a hydrostatic transmission.
My brother had a 4000 gear and always wished I'd been able to buy it from him when he decided to move to Florida. It would be the perfect size for us now. I had just bought a new small tractor a couple of years ago and couldn't afford a very nice 3600 diesel I saw at a sale last year that just had the head reworked.
