This works well, so long as the potatoes you buy at the store have not had any sprout inhibitor applied to them. It is a bummer when you think you are good to go and then get no tuber set due to sprout nip.
They use different coniferous tree barks to treat seed when it is planted commercially, so disease problems may be lessened by planting in some wood chips. (Lots of fir and alder bark containing seed treatments out there). Many gardeners around here plant into wood chips, or straw, or grass clippings with high success. Commercial spuds here are planted into the hill, and watered via center pivot.
