We really didn't have much choice if we wanted to survive on the farm. Finances were VERY limited. There was very little equipment in the market place that could make things easier for us. Things got so bad in the early 50's that Dad seriously considered leaving the state and starting a new business on the west coast. I was willing at the time; mow I'm glad he gave up the idea and stayed on the farm.
It was just like most other problems; you just had to work through it and hope that it all worked out for you. In our area, when grain prices got high after WWII, most people sold all of their livestock and just raised grain. We increased our livestock numbers during that time so we didn't suffer as much when grain prices went back down again - but it was still a lot of work!
